GoGreenInThursday, 15-Aug-2019 | 73rd Independence Day
On the 73rd Independence Day of India, GoGreenIn celebrated freedom the way we know best — on two wheels. But this ride was no ordinary Independence Day ride. It became one of the most memorable moments in our 17-year journey.
We had the rare honour of riding alongside the great granddaughter of Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, who visited Bengaluru on this special occasion. Her presence connected us to a living legacy — the very green soul of our city.
Who was Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel?
Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel (1865–1955) was a German botanist and garden designer who transformed Bangalore into the "Garden City of India." He is best known for his extraordinary work at the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens, where he introduced hundreds of exotic plant species and redesigned the gardens to world-class standards.
Beyond Lal Bagh, Krumbiegel was the visionary behind the tree-lined avenues of Bangalore — those magnificent canopied roads that cyclists and walkers cherish to this day. He also established the first horticultural training school in India, leaving an educational legacy that continues to shape Indian horticulture.
When we ride under Bangalore's green canopy, we ride through Krumbiegel's living masterpiece.
Having his great granddaughter ride with the GoGreen family on Independence Day was a deeply moving experience — a bridge between Bangalore's green past and its cycling future. It was a reminder that the trees we ride under, the parks we pass through, and the green city we fight to preserve are all part of a legacy worth celebrating and protecting.
Freedom is green. Ride for it. 🚴🌳🇮🇳
